Sew with Middle School Kids

Workshop Houston gives young people the opportunity to learn new skills, build relationships with supportive role models, and find creative ways to connect to the importance of education. What began as a bike shop in the Third Ward has grown to include other programs that provide teenagers with positive alternatives at this important time in their lives. One of these programs is the Style Shop, where students create their own custom-made fashions and accessories. Volunteers are needed to teach kids how to sew, do alterations, and build all the skills necessary for creating quality fashions. ASG Houston member Alice Anjo, who volunteers two hours a week, has a great time with the kids, and she encourages more members to come out and help the community.

Hospice Care

We received the following emails from hospice volunteer coordinators asking for volunteers. Please contact them for more information.

My name is Toni and I'm the volunteer coordinator for Buckner Hospice Houston. I am currently in need of folks to join the Buckner Volunteer Angels. We offer many different volunteer opportunities from Patient visits to quilt making and many things in-between. We are very flexible, work around your busy schedule and would be happy for 1 hour a month if that's what you can give. Please give me a call or email me. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Toni Cruse

Clothing Mender

Dress for Success promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. We are an international not-for-profit organization, and the individuals who donate their time and talent to us make it possible for us to fulfill our mission.

Currently we are looking for a part-time volunteer to mend clothing. You would pick up the clothing at our location (near Dacoma and 290) about every other month, and then return the mended items. You would sew buttons on jackets or blouses, mend torn linings, replace zippers on skirts or pants, etc. There are no alterations. Mending is done at your home on your schedule, and there is no pressure to return clothing at prescribed times. Supplies and mileage are not reimbursed.

Interested? Please contact Melinda Wood for more information.
