ABOUT
THE HOUSTON CHAPTER
The American Sewing Guild's Houston Chapter is a fun, friendly & welcoming
group of more than 500 members from the Greater Houston and surrounding
areas. We provide a networking opportunity for sewing enthusiasts and welcome everyone
who loves to sew, regardless of skill level.
In keeping with the ASG's mission statement - "to provide the highest caliber of
support to the sewing individual " - we sponsor at least four sewing events
throughout the year.
Regular sewing events include:
A seminar by a
nationally known speaker in February
Sewer's Retreat in April - escape to with sewing friends for a fun filled weekend.
A Sewing Odyssey in June - full day of classes & lunch with friends.
The annual Luncheon & Fashion Show in October.
Hosting a booth at the International Quilt Festival in November
In addition, the Houston Chapter consists of 15 Neighborhood Groups (NG) in different parts of town - from Katy to Galveston, from Cypress to Bellaire... and yes, there is a Downtown Neighborhood Group too. The Neighborhood Groups are the heart of the American Sewing Guild, and meet monthly to enjoy sewing programs and sharing of ideas. Membership in the ASG entitles you to visit any Neighborhood Group in any part of town.
Community Service is a big part of NG activities where members use their sewing skills to help those less fortunate. Past Community Service projects have included:
-Sewing lap quilts
and adult bibs for nursing homes,
-Angel gowns, tote bags stuffed with toiletries for women & children in crisis,
-Pretty hats (other
than turbans) for cancer patients with temporary hair loss, and much, much more.
-and 2003 was the first
annual citywide "Bear-a-thon". Members in 4 locations across the city on 4
different weekends made bears for fire and police departments to give to
children in distress.
